Sydney Institute for Community Languages (SICLE)

SICLE supports community language schools through project work, resources and professional learning courses for teachers, principals and committees. They conduct research work to inform policy and promote evidence-based teaching approaches, with the aim of empowering teachers and students and promoting the value of community language education.

An online portal for community language resources was established by SICLE to support teaching in out-of-hours community languages schools, primary and secondary schools.

SICLE also offers a range of programs for teachers working in community languages schools, in partnership with NSW Department of Education.

Teaching artistry

This course seeks to strengthen educational artistry by equipping participants with arts-based pedagogical tools that enhance creativity in learning. It supports educators to embed creative practices across the curriculum, fostering student imagination, collaboration, and problem-solving. Through practical workshops and reflective practice, participants will reimagine their teaching as an artistic and creative act.

Language proficiency testing

Language Proficiency Tests (LPT) are delivered by the Sydney Institute for Community Language Education (SICLE). SICLE provides professional pathways for teachers and support for community language students through the development of curriculum resources and assessments.

The LPT provides evidence of teachers’ proficiency in the language they teach or want to teach. It shows that teachers have proficiency to the level of three years’ tertiary study. The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) recognises equivalence to four or six units of post-beginner tertiary language study for native speakers of the language if they have verification from a university of their level of language knowledge and proficiency.
