Overview
Have you ever avoided talking about race, racial injustice, and racial equity, or felt ill-equipped to do so?
Racism remains one of the greatest scourges on society, here in Australia and globally. Yet, many of us are not confident in our abilities to recognise, understand, and take appropriate action against racism.
This online course will increase your knowledge about race and racism. It will explore various themes and issues to increase understanding as well as provide practical tools to develop more confidence in engaging in conversations about race and racism.
What you'll learn
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Develop knowledge about race and racism
- Recognise bias and different constructs of race within cultural and historical contexts
- Demonstrate skills and confidence in participating in racial conversations and influence positive impact

Course aims and program
This course aims to develop participants’ understanding of race, racism, and bias within broader cultural, historical, and social contexts. Participants will build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to engage thoughtfully and respectfully in conversations about race and racism. The course also supports participants to reflect critically on their own perspectives and and to become more actively anti-racist in their everyday interactions and professional contexts.
There are 5 modules in this course:
- Module 1 - What is race?
- Module 2 - What is racism?
- Module 3 - Being anti-racist
- Module 4 - What gets in the way
- Module 5 - Having confident conversations
This course is designed for individuals who want to deepen their understanding of race and racism. It is suitable for professionals, educators, students, leaders, and community members seeking to build greater confidence in participating in conversations about race and contributing to more equitable and inclusive environments.
This is a self-paced course. Participants have six months (182 days) from the day of enrolment to complete the course material. Throughout the course there are guided self-reflection questions to support participants’ learning throughout each module. Participants will also have access to a curated resource kit with additional materials and references to support ongoing learning and reflection.
This course is considered non-award under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and does not provide any official certification from the University of Sydney. Once all modules are completed, you will be issued a Statement of Completion.

There are no material or technological requirements to complete this course
There are 3 activities in total:
- 2 quizzes: Designed to assess participants understanding of key concepts covered within the module, with opportunities to check their knowledge as they progress.
- An action plan: participants are encouraged to apply their learning in a practical way developing a personalised plan to translate insights into meaningful action within their own professional, community, or organisational context

- Enrolment confirmation: you will receive this immediately after your enrolment has been processed.
- Tax invoice: the payer of your enrolment will receive this immediately after your enrolment has been processed.
For some courses, you may also receive the following:
- Course reminders: you will receive emails from Sydney Short Courses in the lead up to the course starting. These include information about the course and, if required, the schedule for online or face-to-face sessions.
- Course materials: if you are enrolled in a course that provides reading or other downloadable materials, you will get access to these materials prior to the class commencing.
- Online session links: you will receive reminder emails the day before and the day of each live session containing the meeting link and meeting ID.
